VARIANCE a vice

Before I go into Six Sigma methodology I would like to talk of VARIANCE, which is the basis of all improvement processes or which creates need for a new process.

As a Human we are always asked to question the unknown...so the basic question that comes to mind are (I will make this my catch line):

What is Variance? How does it impact me? Is it of relevance? What can I do to minimize it? ...so on so forth.

Variance as explained by second law of thermodynamics; is normal state of behavior of a process or an individual without any external force. An object will always move towards a state of anarchy if not acted upon by external force. We as individual or corporate experience this very true law in our daily functioning. Hence, need for change agent. This is what a six sigma manager needs to bring about. A constant stream of controls so that the system does not follow its natural tendency of moving towards anarchy.

To proponents of change, variance is an evil a vice which needs to be resisted and eliminated to have a virtuous world. Variance is greed, vanity, lust, anger, gluttony, jealousy, laziness. One needs to cultivate humility, loyalty, respect, righteousness, trust, courage, patience, perseverance, endurance, will, etc by using controls over actions and mind. A six sigma is to fight variance and befriend change through systematic change in thought and application.

So folk’s happy fighting variance to have a well settled life. Enjoy…

Why Six Sigma - Perspective

As a Human we are always asked to question the unknown...so the basic question that comes to mind are:

Why Six sigma? What is the need for it? How can I use it in my situation? ...so on so forth.

As humans we are never shy of finding easy ways of discouraging the change. Weather the change is in ones habit (I can relate to it), preferences (I can relate to it much more), or functioning. In spite of all this the change is inevitable. It will be brought by external factors or by self to be more competitive or be more acceptable.

Our customers demand higher quality and its integration with operation, the management wants the company to be competitive in market and process excellence to be revenue generating and cost saving than vice verse.

Six Sigma comes as an initiative that suits the bill and more. It helps companies maximize success and inculcate a rational (Mathematical) approach to providing solutions. Then cant experience do the same? Why a need for Six Sigma resource?

Process improvement or creating a quality process needs a larger view and it is only clear when we look at it from a distance. That is out of the box thinking. A logical and rational approach is one that is needed. Had the experience been enough we really don't need change. Being a change agent means being able to evaluate things rationally and logically keeping business goals of the organization in perspective.

Taking a larger life perspective; people who matter around you want higher and quality commitment from you.

It is but natural for a human to be guided by emotions in thought which eventually leads to emotionally charged behavior. It is not easy to change the innate tendency to listen to the heart than to the head. Heart being the seat of emotions while head being the seat of logical analytical rational thinking. When the emotions originating in the heart take over the thought process clarity of thought is lost. Action based on hazy thoughts often result in disastrous consequences. So an emotional thought process must necessarily be tempered with analytical logical processes of the head. This is not to say that all behavior should be a result of logical thoughts alone. Man looses his human touch in the absence of emotions. So a total replacement of heart by the head will result in insensitive or even horrendous actions which might lead to total destruction or annihilation of all opposing ideas. So while it is possible to counter emotional thinking by logical/rational/analytical thinking, it would not be desirable in the interest of relations/humanity as a whole to do so. The golden mean will lie somewhere between the two with greater weight age being given to the head than the heart (51:49 ratio).

Applying Six sigma in real sense will help you be a more rational and analytical being which helps in business as well as personal goals. Enjoy...
